What Causes Painful Sex & Vaginal Dryness?
What is painful sex?
Painful sex (clinically called dyspareunia) and vaginal dryness describe discomfort during intercourse that can include burning, irritation, itching, or a lack of natural lubrication. These symptoms can make intimacy uncomfortable or even distressing.
As estrogen levels decrease — such as during perimenopause, menopause, after childbirth, or with certain medical treatments — the vaginal tissues may become thinner, less elastic, and drier. Without appropriate care, this can lead to inflammation and irritation, increasing the likelihood of discomfort or tearing during and after sex.
Women may experience:
-
Loss of natural moisture and lubrication
-
Dryness, itching or burning in the vaginal area
-
Pain during penetration
-
Discomfort after intercourse, including soreness or burning
-
Feeling of tightness or reduced elasticity
-
Recurrent infections due to fragile tissue
HORMONAL
CHANGES
Drop in estrogen during perimenopause, postmneopause, postpartum, or after certain medical therapies that cause low estradiol and progesterone levels.
AGE-RELATED CHANGES
Thinner, less vascular vaginal lining over time.
MEDICAL TREATMENTS AND MEDICATIONS
Some medications such as anti-depressants & anti-anxiety meds and treatments such as cancer therapy, chemotherapy, or hormone suppression can impact tissue health.
LIFESTYLE AND EMOTIONAL STRESS
Stress, anxiety, and reduced sexual arousal contibute to a worse vaginal dryness.
CHILDBIRTH AND VAGINAL TRAUMA
Stretching, tissue damage, and scarring may affect elasticity and natural lubrication.
When to seek care urgently: severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, new lesions, fever, or concern for infection should be evaluated promptly. This program does not replace urgent or emergency care.
